Man jailed for throwing corrosive substance over another

A man who caused life changing injuries to another by throwing a corrosive liquid over his face and head has been jailed at Swansea Crown Court.

Jivan Dean, 24, attacked Raven Riley who was visiting a friend at a house in an area of Carmarthenshire known as Tipi Valley, on 14 August 2024.

The 20-year-old victim was sat in a chair when Dean entered the room carrying a pan containing the liquid. Dean threw the liquid towards the Mr Riley who instantly felt it burn.

Mr Riley was helped by others who took him to hospital where he was treated for serious chemical burns.

Dean was arrested two days later in the Llanelli area, and tests carried out on his clothes showed traces of Sodium Hydroxide.

Craig Harding of the CPS said: “Dean’s shocking attack showed that he had an intention to cause really serious harm to the victim.

“Mr Riley has been left with life changing injuries because of this callous attack.

“We hope that Mr Riley’s recovery continues and that he can take some comfort in knowing his attacker has been brought to justice.”

Jivan Dean was sentenced on 25 October 2024 to 18 years’ imprisonment with the last four years to be served on licence.
