Driver sentenced for injuring pedestrian

|News, Driving offences

A driver who hit a pedestrian then sped away has been sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court for causing serious injury by careless driving.

Morgan Moon, 20, was driving a Honda Civic on Avenue De Clichy in Merthyr Tydfil on 2 September 2023 when Thomas White was crossing the road having walked down Castle Street.

The collision occurred just before midnight, throwing Mr White, 29, into the air and landing near the kerb. Mr White woke up in hospital two days later having sustained serious injuries which included multiple skull fractures, bleeding and swelling of the brain, and extensive bruising.

Despite the collision Moon carried on driving and was arrested the following day when he attended Merthyr police station.

Louisa Campbell of the CPS said: “Moon was not paying proper attention to his driving which caused this collision.

“His lack of care has resulted in someone being seriously injured and is a reminder to all drivers to remain focussed behind the wheel.

“The CPS takes incidents of poor driving seriously, especially where someone has been injured.

“Mr White is still recovering from his injuries, and we hope he returns to full health soon.”

Morgan Moon was sentenced to five months' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, on 28 August 2024 and was banned from driving for five years.
