Police Officer sentenced for assaulting his wife
A Gwent Police officer who assaulted his wife on two occasions has been sentenced to two years and six months at Cardiff Crown Court.
Whilst the couple were at home on 25 January 2020, an argument arose which resulted in Huw Orphan, 32, leaving the house.
When the victim tried shutting the door, Orphan barged his way back in and tackled his wife to the ground, where she hit her head. However, she managed to run to the bedroom and shut the door, blocking his entry. Orphan gained entry to the room and continued to argue, pressing down on the victim’s arm.
During another argument on 7 April 2020, Orphan kicked his wife to the body causing her to fall backwards down the stairs. As a result, the victim suffered a fractured vertebra.
David Elvy of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Orphan behaved in a disgraceful way, assaulting his wife in their own home.
“The Crown Prosecution Service takes any allegation of domestic abuse extremely seriously and remains determined to bring perpetrators to justice.
“This case demonstrates that we will prosecute offenders, regardless of their standing in the community, whenever the legal test is met.”
Huw Orphan was sentenced on 25 October for an offence of inflicting grievous bodily harm and an offence of actual bodily harm. In a disciplinary hearing following the criminal trial, Orphan’s gross misconduct was found proven, and he was barred from joining any police force.
