Man jailed for attempt murder stabbing

|News, Violent crime

A man who stabbed a pregnant woman has today been sentenced.

The Crown Prosecution Service authorised charges against Daniel Mihai POPESCU, 29, after a vicious attacked occurred in Aberfan on 5 December 2023.

Popescu had become obsessed with the victim, his ex-partner, who was 37 weeks pregnant at the time, and had been following her to various locations. On 5 December 2023, Popescu travelled to Aberfan, Merthyr Tydfil. Armed with a knife he told her he was going to kill her, stabbing her multiple times.

Popescu was arrested and remanded into custody.

Following a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on 4 April 2024, Popescu entered a guilty plea to attempted murder and stalking.  He has today been sentenced to 17 years and 4 months imprisonment.

Jordan Jones of the CPS said “This was an unprovoked, vicious attack that had a great effect on not only the victim, but the wider community as local schools were forced into shut down until the police were able to detain the defendant shortly after the attack.

“I hope the sentencing of this defendant brings a sense of justice to both the victim and the wider community affected by the defendant’s actions.”
