Murderer who strangled his partner sentenced

|News, Domestic abuse

A man who killed his partner by strangling her at their home in Cardiff has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Alcwyn Thomas, 44, had been out drinking with his partner, Victoria Thomas, and others on 19 August 2024. They visited Club 3000 Bingo in Gabalfa, where the group were drinking. Alcwyn Thomas also took cocaine.

The couple returned home and police were called to the property during the early hours of the following day, where they found Victoria had died.

Alcwyn Thomas denied he had intentionally killed Victoria, telling the jury at his trial in Cardiff Crown Court, that her death was due to “erotic asphyxiation”.

Having heard all the evidence in the case the jury convicted him of murder.

Mandy Wintle of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “The defendant’s actions resulted in the tragic loss of Victoria’s life.

“The Crown Prosecution Service did not accept Alcwyn Thomas’ explanation of Victoria’s death and presented evidence to the jury which resulted in his conviction.

“Everyone should feel safe in their own home, and any allegation of domestic abuse is taken very seriously.

“Our thoughts remain with Victoria’s family and friends who have suffered a heart-breaking loss.”

Alcwyn Thomas was sentenced to life imprisonment at Cardiff Crown Court on 24 April 2025 and was ordered to serve a minimum of 20 years.
