This agreement establishes a common understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the CPS, police, and coroners where an investigation gives rise to a suspicion that a serious criminal offence (other than a health and safety or regulatory offence1) may have caused a death; sets out good practice on the communication between CPS, NPCC and coroners, and the bereaved family/next of kin; and ensures that coroners will be kept informed of the progress made during the various outcomes of a criminal investigation.
