Two people sentenced after dog kills child
Two people who had responsibility for a dog that killed a 10-year-old boy in Caerphilly have been sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court.
Brandon Hayden, 19, took ownership of the dog on 3 November 2021 and asked Amy Salter, 29, to look after the dog, named Beast, for a short period.
In the days that followed, Beast showed aggression to other people by jumping at them, some of them being bitten. The dog was also seen to lunge at nearby children.
On the day of the fatal attack, the dog was in a house and not restrained in any way.
Ryan Randall of the CPS said: “Our thoughts remain with Jack, along with his family and friends, who have suffered a heart-wrenching loss.
“Despite warnings from the previous owner, and knowing it’s aggression, Hayden and Salter left the animal at the house without taking any proper measures to control it.
“Their failure to do so had catastrophic consequences.“
Brandon Hayden was sentenced to four years and six months’ imprisonment while Amy Salter was sentenced to three years imprisonment. Both were banned from owning a dog indefinitely.
