A Muslim convert has been sentenced for life plotting to attack an Islamic cleric and other people.

The jury heard he had carried out video reconnaissance on a Birmingham mosque, which was near his home, and given a commentary on the direction the police may come from, as well as possible escape routes.

A screenshot of an Islamic State video was discovered on his phone demonstrating how to kill someone using a knife. A knife was also found at his former home, and he told a friend he wanted to stab to death police officers.

Savage’s mindset was also shown by his dislike of the cleric, aligned with his strong belief in the ideology of Islamic State.

During the trial an expert gave evidence about the cleric’s outspoken criticism of al-Qa-ida and ISIS ideologies and criticism of extremism and terrorism.

He also had images of police stations and Army bases on his phone saying they also needed “refutation”. He had searched for terms linked with firearms.

Bethan David, Head of the Counter Terrorism Division of the Crown Prosecution Service, said: "Jason Savage actively plotted to attack a cleric whose views he disagreed with, and other people.

“The CPS will continue to work to ensure those that plan to commit violent acts in the name of ideology and extremism are prosecuted.”
