Son jailed for murder of his mother
A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his mother.
Bronwyn Jones, who now goes by the name Anarlyn, of Borden, Hampshire, brutally stabbed Anna Jones, 44, before confessing to her murder.
The court heard how Jones was anxious to get to his mother’s address in Petersfield on 9 May 2023, armed with a pruning knife.
Shortly before 8pm, he rang 999 and told them repeatedly “I’ve killed my mum, I’ve killed my mum, I’ve killed my mum, I killed her…”
A witness answered the door to Jones, who told the jury “[It was] like something out of a horror film… [he was] covered head to toe in blood.”
Expert evidence established that Jones had sat astride his mother while slashing her with the knife, as Anna vigorously struggled for her life.
Jones initially described the murder as a mercy killing, telling 999 operators that his mother had asked him to do it.
However, in interview, Jones told officers that the murder had been ‘justice’ for abuse he suffered as a child.
Despite Jones claiming diminished responsibility at the time of the murder, the jury convicted him of murder on 5 December 2024.
Kate Lewis, a Senior District Crown Prosecutor with CPS Wessex, said, “Anarlyn Jones’ violence and aggression culminated in an explosion of rage at his mother, who fought strenuously for her life.
“He callously took Anna’s life into his hands and snatched it away.
“The thorough investigation by Hampshire Constabulary enabled the Crown Prosecution Service to successfully prove that, despite his pleas to the contrary, Jones was fully culpable for his actions.
“I want to commend the courage of the witnesses who saw things they never should have.
“My heartfelt sympathies are with Anna’s family and friends, who have not only had to endure the loss of their loved one, but the unimaginable emotional pain of losing them to someone they trusted.”
