This chapter provides guidance on how unused material in the possession or control of a forensic science provider (FSP) should be revealed to the police and then to the prosecutor. It also reflects the agreement reached between the CPS, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), and the FSPs as to the best way to comply with the legal duties of disclosure to the defence imposed under the CPIA.

All scientific support departments should follow procedures and working practices which ensure compliance with the requirements of the CPIA Code of Practice. Accurate and full records must be kept of all scene examinations, including details of any items retained as potential exhibits. Where such items are submitted for further examination, for example by the fingerprint bureau, or other forensic service provider, the record should indicate that this has been done.

Slavery and Trafficking Risk Orders were introduced under Part 2 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 to restrict the activities of an unconvicted person where there is a risk that they will commit a trafficking offence. The court must be satisfied that it is necessary to make the order for the purpose of protecting named or potential individuals from physical or psychological harm if the offence was committed.
