Guilty: Killer murdered and dismembered man before disposing of remains
A man has been found guilty today of murdering and dismembering a man who he lived with, following a trial at Manchester Crown Court.
Marcin Majerkiewicz, 42, killed Stuart Everett, 67, before dismembering his body and depositing his remains in different locations across Greater Manchester and Salford over the course of a week in an attempt to conceal his crime.
Rebecca Macaulay-Addison, Specialist Prosecutor for CPS North West’s Complex Casework Unit, said: “Marcin Majerkiewicz murdered Stuart Everett before making a despicable and disturbing attempt to cover his tracks by disposing of Mr Everett’s remains.
“He went on to concoct a web of lies to further conceal his barbaric crime. He assumed Mr Everett’s identity, sent messages to others claiming he had suffered a stroke and was hospitalised, and even sent a handwritten birthday card to Mr Everett’s brother, all to give the impression that Mr Everett was still alive.
“Majerkiewicz not only stole a loved one from those who cared for Mr Everett - his subsequent actions are almost certain to have compounded their pain and suffering.
“The Crown Prosecution Service worked closely with Greater Manchester Police to build a strong case, piecing together the CCTV evidence, eyewitness testimony, forensic evidence and phone location data to show Majerkiewicz’s whereabouts in the aftermath of the crime. This ultimately proved that Majerkiewicz carried out the brutal murder.
“Our thoughts remain with Mr Everett’s family for the loss they have endured, and we hope today’s conviction will provide some sense of justice for this unspeakable crime.”
Building the case: how we proved murder
Working closely with Greater Manchester Police, the prosecutor from the Complex Casework Unit at CPS North West, built a case which painted a clear picture of a brutal attack on Mr Everett.
Following the first remains being discovered on 4 April 2024, in an isolated concrete bunker in Kersal Dale Nature Reserve, a complex police investigation began.
It wasn’t possible at that stage to identify who the remains belonged to.
Extensive CCTV enquiries commenced, and officers identified a person of interest seen on 2nd April 2024 on the pathway approaching Kersal Dale, near where the first remains were recovered. He appeared to be carrying a large, heavy bag.
Further coverage showed the same person leaving the area, a short while later, with what appeared to be an empty folded bag. That person was subsequently identified as Majerkiewicz.
Majerkiewicz was arrested on 25 April 2024, having been spotted by officers conducting CCTV enquiries, as matching the description of the suspect. He was in possession of Mr Everett’s mobile phone and a number of his bank cards.
When officers searched the address where Majerkiewicz lived with Mr Everett and a third man, they recovered various traces of Mr Everett’s blood.
There was evidence of an attempt to clean up the scene in a skip outside, including a blood-stained piece of carpet from Majerkiewicz’s room.
When Majerkiewicz’s phone was seized, the police were able to check his whereabouts at key times and compare it to CCTV footage, which led to further remains being recovered from Chesterfield Close in Salford, Boggart Hole Clough, Linnyshaw Colliery Woods, and Blackleach Reservoir.
The police were able to link the remains forensically to Mr Everett.
A postmortem confirmed that Mr Everett had been subjected to a sustained physical assault in the form of repeated strikes to the head with a heavy blunt implement.
There was ultimately, overwhelming evidence that Majerkiewicz brutally murdered and dismembered Mr Everett.
Majerkiewicz will be sentenced on 28 March 2025.
