Former police officer jailed for rape

|News, Sexual offences

A former police officer has been jailed for raping a female police officer and a 16-year-old girl.

Adam Provan, 44, who was a serving police officer when he committed the offences, was convicted unanimously by a jury on 19 June 2023 and sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment and an extended licence of eight years at Wood Green Crown Court today (22 August) for eight counts of rape against a female police officer and a 16-year-old girl.

Provan was found guilty of raping a fellow police officer six times between 2003 and 2005, and twice raping a teenager whom he met on a date after lying about his age in 2010.

In 2010, Provan took the 16-year-old girl on a date. He told the girl that he was a police officer and that he was 22, when in fact he was aged 31 at the time.

He brought the girl to a remote area of a woodland in Romford, East London, and raped her twice during the course of the evening.

It was reported to police in May 2016. An investigation was carried out against Provan who was arrested in June that year and charged in September 2017.

He was originally charged with rape and sentenced to nine years' imprisonment in November 2018. However, following an appeal to the Court of Appeal, his conviction was overturned and a re-trial was ordered.

Separately to these facts, between 2003 and 2005 Provan was engaged in a controlling and coercive relationship with a female police officer. He limited her social connections, threatened her that he would self-harm if she left him and raped her on several occasions.

She reported the case after seeing the 16-year-old girl’s rape allegation against Provan.

Provan denied all the allegations throughout his trial and was ultimately found guilty on all eight counts of rape.

Kunal Dave, District Crown Prosecutor within the RASSO unit in CPS London North, said: “It is particularly shocking that Provan, a police officer, coerced and sexually abused women in order to cater his need for dominance and control. These offences were abhorrent and caused devastating trauma to the victims.

“This lengthy sentence means that other women are now protected from danger at the hands of this sexual predator.

“Provan wrongly believed that the victims would not dare to report the offences to the police. This case demonstrates the commitment and efforts of the police and prosecutors to bring sexual offenders to justice whenever our legal tests are met.

“I would like to thank the victims for giving evidence in court and I hope that this sentence will give them some closure following their ordeal.”
