|FoI Release, Domestic abuse

Request

  • How many females were convicted of domestic abuse offences in the year 2022?
  • What percentage is this of the number of females charged with domestic related offences?
  • How many males were convicted of domestic abuse offences in 2022?
  • What percentage is this of the number of males charged with domestic related offences?

Response

The Crown Prosecution does hold recorded information within the scope of your request.

We have interpreted your request regarding completed prosecution outcomes as equating to the number charged and prosecuted - please see the table below. Please note the caveats underneath the table. The data table provides the number of completed prosecution outcomes for domestic abuse ‘flagged’ defendants, split by female and male gender. The data shows the number and proportion of those convicted during the calendar year 2022.

Domestic abuse flagged prosecutions by gender, 2022FemaleMale
Convictions3,08236,459

Total Completed Prosecutions4,20247,232

Caveats

The counting unit for CPS records is the defendant in a case, as opposed to the number of offences, or the number of cases. Thus, if a single set of proceedings involves more than one defendant, then each defendant is counted, and the outcome is recorded for each defendant.

Convictions comprise guilty pleas, convictions after trial and proceedings which are proved in absence.

Completed prosecution outcomes comprise convictions (guilty pleas, convictions after trial and cases proved in the absence of the defendant) and non-conviction outcomes (prosecutions dropped by the CPS, discharges, acquittals after trial and administrative finalisations).

Data on gender of defendants are held in the CPS Management Information System however the records are incomplete. The gender of the defendant is unknown in some cases and may not be recorded in others therefore the total of male and female gender in a year will not equal the total domestic abuse annual caseload in the CPS Quarterly Data Summaries published on the CPS Website.
