CPS Response to the report of the findings from the full Area Assurance Programme (AAP) 2016-17 and 2018-19
HMCPSI have today [30 October 2019] published a composite report into the work of the CPS, in relation to the Area Assurance Programme (AAP) 2016-17 and 2018-19.
This composite report summarises AAP findings since 2016, from later inspections in 2018/2019 in London North, London South, and follow up inspections of South West, and Cymru Wales.
Overall, we accept that this is a fair and balanced report with the Inspectorate acknowledging good practice and areas for improvement.
Inspectors highlighted many aspects where the CPS performs well, particularly noting that all CPS Areas demonstrate strong leadership and effective budget control. CPS has been commended for driving up the quality and level of leadership, resulting in ratings of good or excellent. In addition, Inspectors identified good performance in relation to staff engagement over multiple locations.
We accept that we need to continue to drive improvements in the quality of our casework, in particular disclosure, case progression and communication with victims. We accept the Inspectorate's findings relating to police file quality and are committed to working with the police to increase the pace of improvement.
