David Tilici, 28, of Chapel Street, Luton, attacked the baby in a room at the Campanile Hotel, near Liverpool’s riverfront on 11 December 2023, while his partner, the baby’s mother, went to get food.

The child’s mother left the room at around 10pm to go to the nearby McDonald’s restaurant. The couple had checked into the hotel for the night around 8pm.

Reception staff say the baby showed no signs of any injuries at that point. Tilici, who had been drinking, called the mother on Facetime while she was at McDonalds.

She rushed back to the hotel room and found the child with significant injuries. She took the baby boy to the reception area where staff were shocked at his condition.

They called an ambulance. Paramedics considered he injuries to be non-accidental and the police were called.

Tilici was obstructive and denied that he had hurt the baby in any way. He claimed the injuries had been caused as the baby had rolled off the bed in the hotel room.

The child was taken to Alder Hey Hospital where medics confirmed that the injuries were not accidental. Tilici was arrested and later charged with casing grievous bodily harm with intent and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

He denied the charges but was found guilty on 7 June 2024 after a trial at Liverpool Crown Court. He was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on 2 August 2024 to ten years in prison.

Senior Crown Prosecutor David Jones, of CPS Mersey Cheshire, said: “David Tilici is a violent, abusive bully who assaulted his defenceless one-month-old baby boy in a drunken rage.

“The mother left the baby for just a short period of time and she said that, if she hadn’t gone to get food, Tilici would have punished her.

“During that short period of time, he assaulted the boy. He has shown no remorse and no acknowledgement of his violent tendencies. The Crown Prosecution Service hopes that his conviction will lead to a new start for the child and his mother.”
