Why a casework assistant?
You play a key role within the legal team preparing cases for court, ensuring all case files are correct. And you provide general administrative help supporting the team in delivering justice.
Meet Helen...
Helen works as a casework assistant in the north east of England. She talks about what she enjoys about her job in the Crown Prosecution Service. 'There are lots of opportunities here, with ongoing support and training. You don’t need to know about the law, you learn as you go. Just go for it.'
What's the role like?
Our casework assistants provide some insight into what you do in this job at the Crown Prosecution Service.
'You manage case files, prepare the bundles for court, liaise with other criminal justice partners including witness care, serve material on defence - and the list really goes on. Every day is different - whether that be working to tight deadlines on remand cases, or completing communications set by prosecutors, every task is rewarding and contributes to delivering justice.
Being able to work on a case from the day it gets charged to the day it's finalised is truly a unique experience which you don't have in many other roles. With this comes the overwhelming feeling of pride in my work and I never shy away from the fact I am proud to work for the Crown Prosecution Service.'
- Izzy, Casework Assistant
'Our job is to work on cases that are dealt with in the magistrates' and Crown Court. The breadth of work we cover means that it never feels monotonous, and you can expect to turn up each week to something new - rather than the repetitive daily grind of some jobs. You can be working with the police, redacting statements, recording case outcomes - just to name a few things we get involved in.
It's exceptionally rewarding knowing you’re contributing in a very real way to prosecuting cases, having seen the evidence and effect on the victims. I never believed that I would be able to so actively participate within criminal justice. I wondered whether the role would involve focusing on stereotypical admin tasks - but that isn't the case at all. You have a real impact on cases, so the title of 'casework assistant' describes what we do really well.'
- Nathan, Casework Assistant
