A man who was caught smuggling millions of counterfeit cigarettes into the UK has been convicted of evading more than £2.4 million in excise duty.

Timothy James Goodlad, 58, of Barnetby, Lincolnshire, has been found guilty today (12 September 2023) of fraudulent evasion of duty following a trial at Winchester Crown Court.

On 28 November 2019, a lorry driven by Goodlad was stopped by Border Force Officers at the Eurotunnel UK Control Zone in France.

A former prison officer at HMP Lincoln has been sentenced after he failed to carry out required checks on a vulnerable prisoner and falsified records relating to his care.

Luke Thomas, 32, did not follow the protocol for caring for prisoners who are in danger of self-harm or suicide and need more intensive support. Overnight on 23/24 June, a prisoner in the Care and Separation Unit at the Category B jail was under the care of Thomas, who was the only prison officer on duty.

A TikTok influencer, her mother and a group of associates have been sentenced at Leicester Crown Court for their involvement in the killing of two men on the A46 in Leicestershire.

Saqib Hussain and Hashim Ijazuddin, both 21, were killed when their car was forced off the road in a deliberate collision instigated by Ansreen Bukhari (46) and her daughter Mahek Bukhari (24).

A man who blackmailed women and children into engaging in degrading sexual acts for him has been convicted.

Anthony Burns (AKA Danny Burns), 39, has been convicted of 41 offences including blackmail, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, causing sexual exploitation of a child and making and distributing indecent images of a child (IIOC).

The CPS authorised the charges against Burns, formerly of Lowestoft in Suffolk, following a National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation.

A nurse has been convicted of murdering newborn babies at the hospital where she worked.

Lucy Letby used a variety of methods to secretly attack a total of 13 babies on the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester hospital between 2015 and 2016.

Seven babies died as a result and today a jury found Letby guilty of their murder.

She was also found guilty of seven counts of attempted murder relating to six other babies. 

A police officer has been jailed after a woman was hit and killed by a patrol car responding to a 999 call.

Shante Daniel-Folkes, 25, died after being struck by a police car that was responding to an emergency call on the southbound A203 Stockwell Road on 9 June 2021. Her injuries were immediately fatal.

PC Nadeem Patel, 28, was behind the wheel of the marked police car which struck Ms Daniel-Folkes, and he previously pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
