Joint Enterprise pilot – background

The CPS commenced a pilot to monitor Joint Enterprise homicide/attempted homicide cases in February 2023. “Joint enterprise”, or secondary liability, is a legal doctrine that applies where persons assist or encourage another to commit a crime. These persons are known as accessories or secondary parties.

The CPS has authorised Surrey Police to charge Urfan Sharif with the murder of his 10-year-old daughter Sara.

Charges of murder have also been authorised against Beinash Batool, Mr Sharif’s partner, and his brother Faisal Shahzad Malik. A further charge of causing or allowing the death of Sara has been authorised against all three individuals. 

They have been remanded in custody and will appear at Guildford magistrates' court on Friday 15 September.

Criminal proceedings are active and all those charged have a right to a fair trial.

A man has been sentenced to 17 years for manslaughter after his ex-partner fell from a top floor flat.

Leonidas Georgalla, 51, has been sentenced to 17 years' imprisonment after his former partner fell from a top floor flat. He had previously admitted to breaching the restraining order on the day that Kathleen John fell three floors from a window.

Upon returning home in the early hours of Friday 29 June 2022, friends and family of the pair saw Georgalla standing in front of the flat claiming that Kathleen had fallen from a window.

A TikTok influencer, her mother and a group of associates have been sentenced at Leicester Crown Court for their involvement in the killing of two men on the A46 in Leicestershire.

Saqib Hussain and Hashim Ijazuddin, both 21, were killed when their car was forced off the road in a deliberate collision instigated by Ansreen Bukhari (46) and her daughter Mahek Bukhari (24).

A substance user from Derby has been jailed for life for the murder of his wife in February 2022 in their family home.

Conrad Iyayi (46) killed his wife Kathryn in the middle of the night in a sustained attack using three kitchen knives. The next morning, he left the house and called the police from a nearby telephone box to alert them to Kathryn’s death.

A nurse has been convicted of murdering newborn babies at the hospital where she worked.

Lucy Letby used a variety of methods to secretly attack a total of 13 babies on the neonatal ward at the Countess of Chester hospital between 2015 and 2016.

Seven babies died as a result and today a jury found Letby guilty of their murder.

She was also found guilty of seven counts of attempted murder relating to six other babies.
