A convicted people smuggler, responsible for the manslaughter of 39 people who died in the back of a lorry in Essex, has today (24 September 2023) been ordered to pay a total of £65,157.65 to victims’ families through a Confiscation Order made by the court today.

Gheorghe Nica, 46, is the final defendant in this series of proceeds of crime confiscation hearings with total orders of £283,802.58, all to be paid by way of compensation to the families of the 39 victims.

One of the five Oxbridge-educated fraudsters who lured wealthy individuals to invest in fake “green” projects is sentenced to an additional term of imprisonment for non-payment of his £2.7m Confiscation Order.

Corrupt James Ibori, 61, used his position as Governor to steal millions to fund a lavish and luxurious lifestyle, buying properties in London, Washington DC, and Texas, as well as a Mercedes and a Bentley. 

A former England U19 footballer has been ordered to pay back £69,747.70 in confiscation after being convicted of supplying cannabis and money laundering offences as part of an organised criminal gang. In separate proceedings, her father Michael Dunn was found to have benefitted by £50,563.53, but he had no assets. If he obtains assets in future, CPS can pursue him for the full amount. 

An accountant who was jailed for defrauding the NHS, companies and individuals, has been ordered to pay back nearly £240,000 and faces an additional 20 months in prison if he fails to pay.

Stephen Day, 55, was sentenced to 11 years and five months imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court on 15 April 2021, after he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fraud and two counts of theft.
